In order to join San Luis Obispo Search and Rescue you must attend three of the monthly unit meetings. At the first meeting you will be briefed by the personnel officer on the process of becoming a member and he or she will answer any questions that you may have. The unit meetings are held at the Sheriff's Honor Farm multipurpose room on Oklahoma Ave. The meetings start at 7:00 PM on the first Tuesday of each month. The Sheriff's Honor Farm is located across from County Animal Services off of Highway 1.

In addition to attending two meetings you must also fill out a membership application, pass an oral interview as well as pass a background investigation conducted by the Sheriff's Office. If you pass both the interview and background investigation you will then become a probationary member. Probation lasts anywhere from 6 months to a year. During that time you will be trained in various aspects of search and rescue. Probationary members are allowed to participate in searches and trainings.

Initial requirements for joining San Luis Obispo Search and Rescue are: 18 years of age or older, resident of San Luis Obispo County, and valid CA Driver's License.
